The glass corridor was a blur as Liev stormed to Eva’s quarters. Luminescence flickered on the edges of his vision, but he was oblivious. He’d taken a hot shower in the small room he was allocated the night before and washed Alex’s blood from his hands, expecting the raging fire in him to subside under the punishing assault of scorching water. But it only burned fiercer, and it had been all he could manage to throw some clean clothes on with the explicit aim of finding Eva. He couldn’t explain it or maybe he didn’t want to. Somehow, he knew only being close to her would ease the pain that now consumed him and soothe the storm in his heart.

He had to hold her in his arms and know she was safe.

None of it made any sense, but he’d given up trying to understand how she made him feel. What mattered was that she did make him feel. And after the desert his life had been since Sanderson died, he wanted that right now more than anything. Around her, he was alive for the first time since forever and he couldn’t walk away from it.

Her door loomed ahead and his pace slowed. Doubts crowded his mind, muttering from familiar recesses, the tender scars of past failure. He clenched his jaw, savoring the familiar pain. He’d never considered himself worthy of a second chance, believing himself beyond redemption, but meeting Eva was making him question every choice.

At her door, he gripped the doorframe, stalling for time, a hand braced on each side. No matter how much he told himself that he was better off with no connections to her, without connections to anyone, it was impossible to stay away.

He blew out a breath, checking left and right. But the corridor was silent. There was just him and the blurred reflections of the lake outside dancing across the polished steel floor.

He’d almost died earlier, and he still hadn’t tasted what he could have with Eva.

He was done with walking away.

Eva was worth fighting for.
